Most “slow computers” are not worn out. They are carrying too many startup programs, background updaters and years of clutter. Work from the top — the first three usually produce the biggest gain.

1. Trim startup apps

Task Manager → Startup → disable anything you do not need at login: chat apps, game launchers, cloud sync, vendor updaters.

2. Uninstall the bundleware

Third-party “driver managers” and duplicate security suites wake each other up and eat CPU. One antivirus is enough — Windows Defender is genuinely fine for most people.

3. Check whether your system disk is still a hard drive

If Windows boots from an HDD, an SSD upgrade beats every software tweak combined, and they are cheap now. This is the only item on this list worth spending money on.

4. Kill scheduled background tasks

Look in Task Scheduler for vendor “assistant” tools that scan your disk at random hours.

5. Free up space

Keep at least 15% of the system drive empty, or Windows cannot manage virtual memory and update caches properly.

6. Set virtual memory sensibly

On a 4 GB machine, 1.5× your RAM on the SSD is a reasonable starting point.

7. Update the GPU driver properly

Get it from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel by model — not from a driver tool. Old drivers cause stutter in games and video.

8. Clean the browser

Disable unused extensions and clear the cache. The browser is the actual source of “my computer is slow” more often than people expect.

9. Turn off visual effects

System Properties → Advanced → Performance → Adjust for best performance. Free resources on older hardware.

10. Scan for malware and miners

A fan that runs at full speed while idle, or unexplained CPU load, can be a mining Trojan. Run a full Defender scan.

Still slow?

If all ten are done and it still crawls, the problem is usually deeper: a corrupted system, driver conflicts, or a failing disk. At that point, a reset beats another round of “optimising”. We can tell you which is the better spend — free diagnosis first.

Still stuck? We can fix it remotely.

Free diagnosis first, fixed price before we start. Windows reinstall from $9.9.
