Reinstalling Windows is not hard. What trips people up abroad are three things: an unfamiliar English installer, a licence that works differently from back home, and the risk of wiping the wrong partition.

Before you start

  • Back up: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, plus browser bookmarks and chat history. Copy them to an external drive or cloud storage — not to another folder on the same disk.
  • Licence: most prebuilt laptops use a digital licence tied to the motherboard and reactivate automatically. University machines may use a KMS licence that needs campus network or a school-provided activation method.
  • USB stick, 8 GB or larger. Creating the installer wipes it.

Create the installer

Download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, plug in the USB, choose “Create installation media for another PC”, and follow the prompts. It takes 20–40 minutes depending on your connection.

Boot from the USB

Use the vendor key (Lenovo and Dell F12, HP F9, ASUS Esc or F8). Always pick the UEFI entry on modern machines.

The two choices that matter

  • Choose Custom install, not Upgrade — otherwise old system files stay behind.
  • Format only the system partition (usually C:, the smallest one). If there is a separate data partition, leave it alone; that may be everything you own.

After the install

Windows 11 needs internet on first boot. If your campus network requires a browser login page you will get stuck — tether to your phone for the setup, then switch back. Then: install drivers from the vendor site (not a third-party driver tool), install Office, restore your files.

Common ways this goes wrong

Formatting the data partition by mistake, activation failing, missing Wi-Fi or audio drivers, and older hardware that does not meet the TPM requirement. All are recoverable — except the formatted data partition, which is expensive to fix. That is exactly why we confirm a backup before touching anything.

If you would rather not risk it, our Expert package includes the backup confirmation step and costs $19.9. See the packages.

Still stuck? We can fix it remotely.

Free diagnosis first, fixed price before we start. Windows reinstall from $9.9.
